Runescape DIY - Part V

=====
Range
=====

Revised by: X Pk X Str X, Dangoso

Ever wanted to kill that monster without breaking a sweat?
Ever wanted that cape of fire?
Crystal bow?!

Then Range really is the skill for you. Would you be able to do, AND afford to get the fire cape purely on mage and melee? Of course it's possible, yet Range is easily the best choice. And as much as people hate it, farcasting is a skillful tactic used to win Duels and Pk'ing alike.

Ever since the update of Crossbows, people have found a new love to range. First, the max was in the 20s. Then it shifted up to 30s. Now, it's easily in the 60s. Void knight? I mean really, you'd NOT want this cape?

______________
Arrow Droppers
ˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉ

Rune - Dust Devils, Fire Giants, Range Minigame
Addy - Ankou
Steel - Ava's Accumulator
Bronze/Iron - Minotaurs
Mith Bolts - Chaos Druids (RoW), Waterfiends

If all else fails, you can always smith or fletch your own

________
Weapons
ˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉ

MSB: The old favorite. It’s cheap, effective, accurate, fast, and can do good damage.

Rune C'bow: My new favorite since they’ve been updated. Gem tipped bolts WILL kill faster than their arrow counterparts and they give a new purpose to all those bolts and gems you have lying around. In addition to the latest slayer update, broad bolts are a cheap new favorite. Better than addy, yet so much cheaper!

For a list of all the bolt heads and their enchanted effects, visit the RS Knowledge Base!

Crystal Bow: I prefer the MSB with rune arrows to the Crystal bow, but this kills at about the same rate and if it keeps you from buying arrows then I’m all for it!

Karil’s C'Bow: If you do barrows runs anyway, why not fire a few bolt racks off? It may be the best Staking or Fight Caves weapon out there. Don’t forget that you can buy racks in Port Phasmatys.

Dorgeshuun C'bow: As fast as your average Crossbow, and much cheaper ammo (bought after Lost Tribe). You only need 28 Ranged!

Knives/Darts: When I make these, I actually prefer darts. Feathers are easier to get than ores, and darts kill just as fast. Either is best used against weaker monsters, such as Fire Giants or Bloodvelds.

Dark Bow: Not the world's best choice in training. Good for pk'ing, that's about it. Prices are dropping a lot, and will become stable.

Hunter C'Bow: Comparable to MSB with Mith/Addy arrows. If you enjoy tracking this is a good perk!

Chinchompas: Possibly the fastest Range Xp out there as they hit multi-target. Again if you Hunt ‘em, use ‘em! Otherwise, they are a serious drain to your cash income.

Salamanders: I haven’t played with these much, but they can train Str, Mage and Range as well as giving you something to do with Herbs you may not use. Most of all though, these are fun and this is a game ya know! Check the Herblore post for tips on making ammo.

Cannon: Still don’t like it, but you can't deny the results!

___________
Range Armor
ˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉ

D hides: The standard set; from regular leather to Black D, this is the base with which all other armors are compared. Cheap and effective and coming in a variety of styles from FoG, to Treasure Trails to the Crafting skill this is your default costume.

Void Knight: Excellent for fighting things you don't miss often in other range gear. Increases level by 15%, which includes damage done! Wear this any time you can.

Karil's Set: Mainly used for it's high Mage resistance, I choose D hides over Karil's every time I'm ranging

Showoff Gear: Third age, Armadyl, even the Archer Ring is not worth the cost from an effectiveness standpoint despite having higher stats than your standard black D. The purpose of these items is to show off, so wear them with pride if you can afford 'em!

Boots: Having only three range boosting selections to choose from is much better than one or none in the old days! Frog boots (+2), Snakeskin (+3), and Ranger (+8) are some of the most expensive bonuses you can buy. Spend your money here last for best results!

Hats: We've come a long way from the days of Cowl or Coif, but much like the boots, higher range bonuses get expensive. Two often overlooked helms are Penance Ranger and Spined. Both have the same +6 to range that the standard Archer helm has without the cost or requirements to wear

__________
What to Kill
ˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉˉ

Slayer is a great way to train range. Although the Xp rates are a bit lower, you profit from nearly all tasks you don't use a cannon for.

Dragons are my favorite target. They support crafting and prayer and make money like no other. Please see the Bestiary for Range tips on nearly all Dragons, and the Prayer and Crafting posts for tips on using the drops!

Demons are popular to range. Try the Lesser in the Wizard Tower, Greaters in the Ogre Enclave, or the Blacks in Taverley, under Edgeville, or the Chaos Tunnels (high Crimson charm drop rate here!). High Hp, mediocre defense, and decent drops make these great for those who want good Xp rates without constantly staring at the screen.

Elves are commonly ranged in the Elf Camp (NW Tirannwn) but more often melee’d in Lletya due to the proximity to an altar. They are exceptional droppers, having essentially the same drops as dragons, except they cough up premade, alchable green d hide and clues often. Never fight the ranger elves though!

If you must range Fire Giants, there is one up for Ranging in the back of the Smoke Dungeon near Fareed’s cave. It’s a long trip, but you’ll be the only one there!

For lower level Rangers who trained their melee skills up first, you may consider Melee/Range fighting. If you pick a monster that can’t hurt you, such as Men, Chaos Druids, Cows and Chickens etc… then you don’t need safespots to range. Even very low level NPCs drop useful Herbs and other supplies. All you have to do is actually pick them up!

Even higher level rangers can find close quarters fighting with knives to be profitable. Chaos Druids, Banshees Cave slimes, Desert Goats, and Mos Le'Harmless Snakes are all level 35- monsters worth 500 to 2K Gp per kill. Ranging them you can stand put and have them bring the drops to you

And finally, Aviansies. Commonly hunted either for Armadyl kill count or the fact they are exceptional addy bar droppers, they're also fairly good experience. Many people like to bring pray pots and pray against them, but it's now seen as safe to tank them with the right equipment. As they are found in GWD, it's always highly recommended to bring at least one item of the other gods, excluding Bandos possibly  Not a far walk from the Trollheim tele spot, their position really does help and their drops will probably make you happy !
